Early in the film Julia and her husband park in front of a cafe. As Meryl Streep gets out of the car she almost does a "Mary Tyler Moore"-style pirouette of excitement. It took my breath away that Ms. Streep was able to convey that moment. It immediately carried me psychically back to France where I've had that feeling a time or two (but haven't made the pirouette). Amy Adams--nice to look at but terribly outclassed.Timhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08766643317111299150noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20798753.post-40803605930680816602009-12-17T22:41:52.809-08:002009-12-17T22:41:52.809-08:00After looking through some of your other reviews, ...After looking through some of your other reviews, I feel it is necessary to call you out on your poor "review" of Rudo Y Cursi. Seeing as how you gave a remake as poorly made as "The Invasion" a B, a film that reeks of hipsters and horrible American slang words in "Juno" an A, and a film that perhaps is one of the most horribly edited and most horrible utilizations of the Beatles' songs (Across the Universe) an A, I'm afraid that I can't agree with your evaluation of Rudo Y Cursi.

Rudo Y Cursi, is actually a powerful film (though still not fully matured film, seeing as how this is Carlos Cuaron's first feature) that aims at showing you how life really is for Southern Folk living in Mexico. Most will never make it out, and rather than giving audiences a story that tickles their fancy and makes their heart melt, we see how very much "corny and tough" each brother is and how that plays into their rises and even quicker downfalls. The movie is meant to be a comedy. I'm not sure if you were able to infer that. Their plight into stardom is meant to be seen as predictable, yet it is still bittersweet because they are unable to keep this state of prosperity. If you were to do your research before you watched this film, you would see that rarely do "poor" farmers and indios make it into the soccer league. Yet they still failed. Even the scene of one being a "one hit wonder" is incredibly hilarious. It was a running part of the joke that neither had immense skill. They wanted the fame more than the opportunity to simply be successful and supply for their families. Their greed and stupidity won out.

And to say that there was no chemistry between real life childhood friends Bernal and Luna also baffles me. Their chemistry was stimulating in Y Tu Mama Tambien and they did an even better job here because they had to explore the comedic side of their friendship.

This movie isn't aiming to be an oscar award winner. It was released with all intents and purposes of being an independent film. I thought that it set reasonable expectations that were met. It wasn't attempting to make a hit film. It was an exploration into a medium and a genre.

I do agree with some of your reviews, but I just have to disagree with you on this. Perhaps attempting to review movies in a "nutshell" you are limiting their depth and are looking for things to immediately identify them as good or bad. I do respect you however, for admitting to your cultural insensitivity. It gives me an idea of the particular lens you were viewing this film with. I shouldn't be surprised, this same lens pervades many of your foreign film reviews.

BestAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20798753.post-72408927967080563012009-10-10T13:05:20.427-07:002009-10-10T13:05:20.427-07:00Good review, the movie pretty much sucked because ...Good review, the movie pretty much sucked because I was actually watching paint dry during the movie & it was by far more entertaining. However, it wasn't his mother that he met again, it was his sister. The movie also never mentions his accolades as an LA performer, it just glazes over the fact that Mr. Ayers went to Juilliard.Brianhttp://www.yahoo.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20798753.post-71941821616112913002009-07-12T02:58:42.828-07:002009-07-12T02:58:42.828-07:00I saw this movie and I completely disagree with yo...I saw this movie and I completely disagree with your assessment of the end. He did not choose a life of weed in the end. He didn't go back to Humboldt at all. He chose something new - not his old life and not the one he forged in Humboldt. It was a bold choice by the filmmaker and I am shocked that you missed the whole point of the end completely.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20798753.post-58020030563847154922009-06-21T19:36:51.769-07:002009-06-21T19:36:51.769-07:00I was born in Det. 50 some yrs ago. My only credential is that I am an enthusiastic film watcher who likes to write. I go into my well-stocked, very diverse, independent video store and of the many thousands of offerings, I pass over most as not remotely related to my interests. I read the box on some that look promising, returning most of those to the shelf. I select a few that capture my attention and Juncture was one of those. I am interested in the psychology of betrayal and revenge, and I enjoy vigilante stories and paranoid thrillers. I worked for ten years as an executive at a national nonprofit corporation serving sexually abused children, similar to the work of the protagonist in Juncture. With all that affinity, I was disappointed that Juncture did not deliver for me, and maybe my review expressed some of that emotionality. I respect what it takes to create any artistic work, especially a film, and especially with a low budget. And I know what it’s like to put yourself out there. But the film must produce the goods regardless – psychological, cinematic, acting, social or intellectual. At least anyone reading this exchange might now be motivated to rent Juncture. I look forward to reviewing your next project, James.Bill Adamshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02950185676692819673noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20798753.post-52581970220360217382008-11-10T04:57:00.000-08:002008-11-10T04:57:00.000-08:00You write very well. You write very well.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
